Finnish Air War

Finnish Air War 1939-1940, 1941-1944

Introduction:

The Finnish Air War or FAW for short is finished after 6 years work!

Our goal was to simulate the air war between Finland and The Soviet union during World War Two as realistic as possible using the flight-simulator European Air War. FAW can be played in Single missions, campaign or in Multiplayer.

FAW is a community project by: Edward, FreddyB, Illu, Knegel, Knug, Neira and vonOben.
A lot of other people in the community have contributed with their work and it wouldn't have been possible without them! Thanks a lot!

There are tree campaigns in FAW:
The Winter War: November 30, 1939 - March 13, 1940
The Continuation War: June 25, 1941 - May 8, 1944.
The Summer 1944 Soviet offensive: May 14, 1944 - September 4, 1944. In this campaign it's also possible to fly for the Germans.

The Winter War, November 30, 1939-March 13, 1940

Historical background:

In 1939 Finland was no real threat to the Soviet Union, but with the Finnish border barely 50 miles from Leningrad, the naval bases in Finland could control the Gulf of Finland and restrict Soviet naval activities in the Baltic.

The Soviet Union, with 23 divisions, 460,000 troops and 900 planes attacked Finland along a 900-mile front without a declaration of war in November 30, 1939. The Finnish Air Force had approximately 300 aircraft in 28 squadrons of which 114 were combat-ready. Most aircraft was outdated and the only modern fighter was the Fokker DXXI and the only modern bomber was the Bristol Blenheim. Compared to the size of the country and the number of enemy planes, the strength of the Finnish Air Force was too small. During December the Finns purchased new fighter aircraft and the first to arrive were Italian Fiat G50s, Gloster Gladiators biplanes and Morane-Saulnier MS 406s.

The Finnish fighters were mainly used to defend the home front and the bombers to pinpoint attacks, usually in small formations. By early March the Finnish military was close to a total collapse, and. Finland was saved by agreeing to the Soviet peace terms which was signed on March 13, 1940.

In The Winter war the FAF shot down 190-280 enemy aircraft and lost 35-62 planes.

The Continuation War, June 25, 1941 - September 4, 1944

Historical background:

In the summer of 1940 when the Soviet Union annex Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the Finns believed they were next. By the spring of 1941, the Finnish military was co-operating with the German high command in planning for Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, scheduled for June 1941. Three days into the war, Soviet pilots bombed German positions in Finland. Which gave Finland a reason to declare war on the Soviet Union.

An initial offensive in the first months of the war re-establishing the 1939 boundaries, after that the front didn't move much in either direction. The Finnish Air Force made interception missions of attacking Soviet bombers and their escorts, ground support operations and reconnaissance/transport flights mainly in the southeastern part of Finland. At the beginning of the Continuation War, the Finns had 6 squadrons of 126 fighters as 33 Brewster B-239s, 26 Fiat G.50s, 27 Morane-Saulnier MS.406s, 18 Twin-Wasp engined Fokker D.XXIs and 12 Mercury engined Fokker D.XXIs. The first new Messerschmitt Bf 109 G2 fighters arrived in March, 1943 and the first Bf 109 G-6s arrived in May, 1944.
In the summer of 1944 a massive Soviet offensive started on June 9 and Marshall Mannerheim asked for assistance from Germany. Already on June 16 detachment Kuhlmey flew to Finland with 32 Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers and 32 Focke Wulf 190 fighters. After repelling all Russian attacks the Finnish government decided to end their role in the war and an armistice was signed in September 1944.

The 109 G fighters were the most victorious Finnish plane in the Continuation war, 162 Bf 109 Gs saw service and they shot down 663 enemies. The second most victorious plane was the Brewster B-239 Buffalo, 44 planes saw service and they shot sown 478 enemies.
